Most visitors to Lake Como never look up at the wooded hill behind the city — which is a shame, because the Castello Baradello sits right there, a medieval watchtower with one of the best free views over the lake and the city below. The best part for our guests: it rises directly above Rebbio, so the trailhead is a short walk or ride from our front door. No car, no ferry, no ticket queue — just lace up your shoes or grab a bike. Here is everything you need to plan a half-day on the Baradello.
What the Baradello actually is
The Torre del Baradello is a 12th-century tower perched on a hill at around 430 metres, linked to Frederick Barbarossa and centuries of Como's history. Today it is a small archaeological park: the restored tower (open seasonally, with a modest entry fee to climb it), the ruins of the old fortifications, and shaded woodland paths all around. Even when the tower itself is closed, the hilltop terrace and viewpoints are freely accessible — and that view alone is worth the climb.
On foot — the family-friendly walk
From Rebbio you can reach the hill on foot and follow the marked paths up through the woods to the tower. It is a real walk with some uphill — you will feel it in your legs — but it is manageable for reasonably active families and older children, and entirely shaded for most of the climb. Take water, comfortable shoes with grip, and budget a relaxed couple of hours up and back with stops for the views.
By mountain bike
The hill behind Como is laced with trails and forest tracks, and the Baradello is a natural objective for a ride straight from the neighbourhood. You can climb on a mix of paths and quiet lanes and link the area into longer loops on the Spina Verde ridge. It suits riders who are comfortable with climbs and loose surfaces — bring a bike with proper tyres and brakes, not a city rental.
The view from the top
This is the payoff. From the hilltop you look straight down onto the city of Como, the first basin of the lake, and the mountains folding away to the north. On a clear day you can trace the western shore toward Cernobbio and pick out the snow on the higher peaks. It is the kind of panorama people pay for at lookout points elsewhere on the lake — here it is free, and earned on your own two feet or two wheels.
Make a half-day of it
Pair the climb with a picnic at the top, or come back down into Rebbio for lunch at a local trattoria — the kind of unhurried, non-touristy meal the neighbourhood does well. It is the perfect low-cost morning for a day when you want lake scenery without the crowds, the boats, or the parking stress down on the waterfront.
A trail right outside the door
Our apartments in Rebbio sit at the foot of the Baradello hill — hiking and mountain-bike trails start a few minutes away, with the lake a short drive beyond. Direct booking, no platform fees.
