Every first-time visitor to Lake Como asks the same question: should I stay in Bellagio or Como city? Bellagio has the postcard reputation. But as local hosts who live and work on the western shore, we have a perspective that most travel blogs miss. Here is our honest, unsponsored comparison.
The local choice
The famous choice
The transport reality nobody tells you
Getting to Bellagio from Milan requires either a long ferry ride from Como, a taxi, or a coach — typically 1.5 to 2 hours door to door. Getting to Como city from Milan Centrale is 40 minutes by fast train. If you are combining Lake Como with other Italian destinations — Venice, Florence, the Cinque Terre — Como city is incomparably better connected.
The crowds question
Bellagio in July and August is extremely crowded. The alleyways that look so romantic in photographs become genuinely difficult to navigate between 10am and 6pm. Cruise ship passengers, day-trippers, and hotel guests all converge on a village centre that is smaller than it appears online. Como city, by contrast, has enough size and depth to absorb visitors without losing its character.
The price difference is significant
A hotel room in Bellagio in high season can cost three to four times what a well-equipped apartment in Rebbio costs per person per night — and the apartment gives you a full kitchen, more space, and the freedom to eat like a local rather than paying tourist restaurant prices for every meal.
Who should choose Bellagio
Bellagio makes perfect sense for: a short romantic break (2-3 nights) where the iconic setting is the point, honeymooners who want luxury hotel pampering, or travellers for whom the central lake position is essential and budget is not a concern. As a destination visit from Como, it is also magnificent — we strongly recommend the ferry trip across.
Who should choose Como city / Rebbio
Como is the better base for: families or groups who want space and a kitchen, travellers combining the lake with Milan or other Italian cities, anyone staying more than 3-4 nights, visitors who want to explore the whole lake rather than one village, and anyone who values an authentic local experience over a tourist postcard.
Visit Bellagio — it truly is beautiful. But stay in Como. You will spend less, connect more easily with the rest of Italy, eat better, and experience the lake the way people who actually live here do. The ferry to Bellagio takes 90 minutes and costs almost nothing. Make it a day trip.
