How to Get Around Lake Como
Without a Car

By LoreLake Holidays  ·  May 2026  ·  7 min read

Driving on Lake Como's narrow lakeside roads — especially in summer — is genuinely stressful, parking is scarce and expensive, and the most beautiful experiences on the lake are on the water anyway. The good news: public transport on Lake Como is excellent, surprisingly affordable, and in many ways more enjoyable than driving. Here is everything you need to know.

The Ferry Network — Your Main Tool

Gestione Governativa Navigazione Laghi operates the Lake Como ferry network and connects virtually every significant village on the lake. There are three types of service: traghetti (car ferries crossing the lake), battelli (slower boat services stopping at multiple villages), and aliscafi (fast hydrofoils for longer distances). For most travellers, the standard battello service is ideal.

Como → Bellagio
~1h 45min
Battello, stopping at lakeside villages. Scenic and relaxing.
Como → Cernobbio
~15 min
Short hop — perfect for an aperitivo evening in Cernobbio.
Como → Varenna
~2h
One of the most beautiful boat journeys in Italy.
Bellagio → Varenna
~15 min
The famous centre-lake crossing. Run it both ways.
Money-saving tipA one-day navigation pass covers unlimited ferry travel across the entire lake and costs a fraction of what parking alone would cost. Buy it at the ferry terminal in Como.

Trains — For Milan and Airport Connections

Rail
Como San Giovanni Station
Fast trains to Milan Centrale in approximately 40 minutes, with connections to Malpensa Airport via Milan. This is the main station for fast Milan services. From our apartments in Rebbio it is a short bus ride or drive away.
Rail
Como Camerlata Station
The nearest station to our apartments in Rebbio. Regional trains toward Milan and the local line, handy for car-free arrivals. From here a short bus or taxi brings you to the door, or down to the lakefront and ferry terminal.

Buses — Underrated and Efficient

ASF Autolinee operates an extensive bus network connecting the villages along both shores of the Como branch. The C10 line along the western shore (passing through Cernobbio, Moltrasio, Argegno, and Tremezzo) runs regularly and offers lake views from every window. Tickets are cheap and the buses are generally punctual.

Local tipThe bus along the western shore is often faster than the ferry for intermediate stops, and considerably cheaper. It is also less crowded, particularly in peak season when tourists default to the boats.

E-Bikes — The Secret Weapon

Several rental operators in Como offer e-bikes by the day or half-day. The old Via Regina road running north along the western shore from Como through Cernobbio is flat, lightly trafficked, and has lake views the entire way. On an e-bike, you can cover 15-20km comfortably before the lake's topography becomes challenging. This is genuinely one of the best ways to see the lower lake.

Water Taxis — Worth It for Special Occasions

Private water taxi services operate across the lake and can take you directly from the lakefront near Villa Olmo to any destination in 20-30 minutes. They are not cheap — expect €80-150 for a cross-lake trip — but for a sunset transfer to dinner in Varenna, or a private arrival at Villa d'Este's private dock, they are extraordinary.

Walking — More Than You Think

Como city is walkable in ways that surprise most visitors. Once you are down at the lake, the city centre, the lakefront, Villa Olmo, and the ferry terminal are all connected on foot in under 20 minutes. Our base in Rebbio sits on the city's southern edge — a short bus ride or drive from the lakefront — so you reach the walkable core quickly and then explore it entirely on foot.

Summary
The car-free Lake Como week
Train from Milan → Como San Giovanni or Camerlata → short bus or taxi to the apartment in Rebbio → day passes for ferry + bus → e-bike for western shore → water taxi for one special evening. Total transport cost for a week: probably €100-150 per couple. Parking in Como for a week: the same or more, with significant stress included.

Stay where everything connects

Our Rebbio apartments are well served by city bus and close to Como Camerlata station, with the lake, ferries and Via Regina cycle route a short hop away. Car-free works beautifully here.
